Ancient Sounds of Byzance

Digital Release 2017
Ancient Spunds of Byzance is the album with which Terra Della Sera presents itself after many years of silence. The same musicians but new instruments. The idea of this new album was born in the middle of the warm summer, period in which the desire of exploring exotic lands becomes strong. And we have made it with new sounds. Starting from the ancient Byzance, through the golden Constantinople, we have arrived in Istanbul in order to run across the Silky Road. Mysteries, spirituality, parfumes of Asia Minor merge to create charming atmospheres that flow on the waves of the Aegian Sea since ever.

Digital Release 2026

Il Principe e gli Antichi Uccelli was created in the early 1980s, during a period in which Terra della Sera was exploring a musical territory between experimental electronics, ambient music, minimalism and timbral research.Created by Carlo Luzi, Paolo De Gregori and Marco Di Francesco, with the soprano voice of Daniela Massi, the work belongs to a time when synthesizers, acoustic instruments, voice and magnetic tape could become elements of a single, evolving soundscape. Rather than following the conventional structure of a sequence of songs, Il Principe e gli Antichi Uccelli unfolds as an imaginary place. It moves through atmospheres, apparitions and transformations, where electronic and acoustic elements coexist and the voice enters the music as a presence, contributing to the suspended, almost ritual quality of the work.

From the Original Tapes

The recordings remained preserved on magnetic tape for more than forty years. The original material has now been recovered, restored and digitized. The purpose of the restoration was not to make these recordings sound contemporary, but to bring them back into the present while preserving as much as possible of their original identity — their dynamics, textures and analogue character.Inevitably, the tapes carry traces of time. Those traces, too, have become part of the history of the music they contain.
The digital release now allows Il Principe e gli Antichi Uccelli to emerge once again from the archive and reach listeners who could never have encountered it when it was originally created.

A Trace from 1983

Part of the work had already begun its journey beyond Terra della Sera in the early 1980s.
Il Principe e gli Antichi Uccelli – Part 4 appeared in 1983 on the international cassette compilation One For Bangkok, released by the Belgian label L’Agence des Refusés.

Terra della Sera appeared alongside artists from the international independent and experimental scene of the period, including Cleaners From Venus, The Legendary Pink Dots, Bene Gesserit, Pascal Comelade, Tara Cross and Enno Velthuys.
Decades later, the recording would occasionally resurface.
In December 2019, Il Principe e gli Antichi Uccelli – Part 4 was broadcast by the American independent radio station WFMU, as part of a selection devoted to One For Bangkok.
In May 2026, the piece returned to WFMU, this time on The Arbitrarium with Arb. More than forty years after its original appearance, a recording born in the early 1980s was once again finding new listeners across the Atlantic.

A Second Life

Today, Il Principe e gli Antichi Uccelli returns in a broader form through the recovery of Terra della Sera’s original recordings.
This is not a reconstruction of the past, nor is it intended to be.
It is an opportunity to hear again music that, for decades, survived on the fragile medium of cassette tape — music born within the independent electronic culture of the early 1980s and now, through restoration and digitization, able to begin a second life.

Il Principe e gli Antichi Uccelli is now available digitally on Spotify and Bandcamp.

Some music belongs to its time.
Some music waits for another one.
